All HPER activity courses numbered above 1120 are graded on a Pass/Fail basis. Students, by mutual agreement with instructor, may earn letter grades (A, B, C…).


HPER 1102 Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco, 3 credits
Study of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco including various effects on individuals, families, and society. Issues related to prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation will be examined.

HPER 1103 First Aid and CPR, 3 credits
A course consisting of knowledge as well as skill in first aid, accident prevention and CPR for infant, child, and adult. This course covers general knowledge of body systems as well as victim assessment, victim management, and victim stabilization. The course also covers two-person CPR, as well as use of pocket masks and bag-valve ventilation for infant, child, and adult.

HPER 1106 CPR Re-Certification, 1 credit
Prerequisites: CPR Re-certification—with instructor approval
This course is for students who are currently certified in CPR (either basic or Professional Rescuer) as well as those students whose cards have expired within the last three months. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will receive a current two-year certification in CPR or Professional Rescuer and/or Basic CPR.

HPER 1110 Personal and Community Health, 3 credits
Understanding of what health really means in today’s complex society. Course will include an overview of concepts and concerns involving the many dimensions of health. Discussions will cover physical, mental, emotional, social, and environmental health and how it relates to an individual and society.

HPER 1112 Nutrition, 3 credits
Overview of basic principles of nutrition, as well as current problems and topics regarding both personal and world nutrition. Topics include contemporary issues such as food labeling, dieting practices, eating disorders, fitness, malnutrition, and nutrition throughout the life cycle.

HPER 1115 Stress Management, 3 credits
(Cross-listed as PSYC 1115)
Investigation of various theories and techniques used in effective stress management. The course is designed to help students develop effective stress management techniques, including cognitive restructuring, perception modification, deep breathing, muscle relaxation, and others.

HPER 1120 Wellness for Life, 4 credits
Focuses on the knowledge and skills necessary for the development and enhancement of a healthy lifestyle throughout the life span. Appropriate for people of different wellness levels. This four-credit course includes two credits of classroom instruction and two credits from a selected group of activity courses. Students must register for HPER 1120 and the activity course concurrently.

HPER 1124 Canoeing, 1 credit
Practice of techniques, principles, and safety for beginning canoeists. Basic swimming skills or Red Cross card recommended.

HPER 1132 Skiing, 1 credit
Classes meet off campus at a commercial ski area. Groups will be separated according to skiing abilities (for example, beginning through racing and moguls). An extra fee is required for lessons and tow ticket for all day (and evening) skiing. Equipment rental, if needed, is extra. Must arrange personal transportation. Instruction is provided by professional instructors.

HPER 1133 Cross Country Skiing, 1 credit
Equipment and clothing selection, safety, diagonal stride, double poling, turns, uphill and downhill technique. Class meets on and off campus.

HPER 1134 Snowboarding, 1 credit
Classes meet off campus at a commercial ski area. Beginning through advanced snowboarding will be taught. Groups will be separated according to skill level (skating, jumping, racing, snowboard park). An extra fee is required for lessons and tow ticket for all day (and evening) snowboarding. Equipment rental, if needed, is extra. Must arrange personal transportation. Instruction is provided by professional instructors.

HPER 1140 Folk and Social Dance, 1 credit
Etiquette, position, and basic fundamentals of social and folk dancing.

HPER 1141 Modern Dance, 1 credit
Introduction to the fundamentals of modern dance. Work will include beginning exercises with emphasis on correct body alignment and simple movement phrases to improve coordination and rhythm.

HPER 1143 Ballet, 1 credit
Introduction to ballet for beginning students. Work includes basic positions, barre exercises, stretches, and simple ballet combinations. Emphasis is on correct body alignment along with the use of ballet vocabulary.

HPER 1144 Camping, 2 credits
Practice of principles and techniques related to outdoor camping. Field trips, cookouts, and camping. Students need to have access to some camping equipment and be able to participate in one weekend camping experience.

HPER 1145 Yoga, 1 credit
This is a beginning level class focusing on improving muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and balance through performing sequences of yoga poses. This course also emphasizes relaxation and breathing techniques to reduce stress and improve concentration.

HPER 1146 Aerobic Dance, 1 credit
Exercise program using dance warm-up and steps to attain aerobic fitness. Emphasis on basic skills and concepts needed for a safe and efficient workout. Wear exercise clothes and good aerobic shoes.

HPER 1147 Low Organization and Lead-up Games, 1 credit
Emphasis upon games of few rules with simple basic skills and games that lead up to commonly known sports. Participants develop skills in game leadership. Excellent class for students who are planning to work with children.

HPER 1148 Ice Skating, 1 credit
Basic skills and knowledge of skating for the non-skater or beginning skater.

HPER 1149 Recreational Games, 1 credit
Participation in, knowledge and adaptability of recreational activities appropriate for various individuals, families, and social groups.

HPER 1152 Aerobic Fitness, 2 credits
Introduces students to basic knowledge of aerobic conditioning and methods in which to improve lifelong wellness. Muscular and cardiovascular fitness will be developed through the use of various forms of activities. Coursework includes lecture, lab and active participation. Emphasis is on individual’s need and capabilities.

HPER 1155 Archery, 1 credit
Fundamentals of form, safety, choice, and care of equipment. Introduction to target archery will be included in the class.

HPER 1156 Golf, 1 credit
Fundamentals of strategy, rules, and competition relative to the beginning level of golf. Access to golf equipment is required.

HPER 1157 Tennis, 1 credit
Skills, techniques, rules, and basic strategy for the beginning tennis player. Emphasis is on correct form, timing, and court movement.

HPER 1158 Floor Hockey, 1 credit
Emphasis on rules, skills, techniques, and strategies of floor hockey.

HPER 1159 Bowling, 1 credit
Fundamentals, techniques, scoring, and rules of bowling.

HPER 1160 Weight Training and Conditioning, 2 credits
Activity with emphasis on improvement of total body fitness: strength, power, agility, flexibility, and cardiovascular efficiency, through weight resistance exercises and conditioning.

HPER 1161 Body Mechanics and Fitness, 2 credits
Introduces the student to basic knowledge and proper mechanics of physical fitness through various types of conditioning. Coursework includes lecture, lab, and active participation, as well as basic understanding of body adaptability to conditioning. Emphasis on individual’s needs and capabilities.

HPER 1162 Power Walking/Jogging, 2 credits
Designed to meet the needs of the intermediate to advanced fitness walker, the beginning jogger, or the beginning runner. Class is designed to meet each student’s individual needs and fitness level. Beginning walkers should enroll in HPER 1165. Being able to walk a mile in under 14 minutes is recommended.

HPER 1163 Badminton, 1 credit
Introduction to the basic skills, techniques, rules, and strategy of badminton. The student will play singles as well as doubles.

HPER 1164 Racquetball, 1 credit
Basic skills, techniques, rules, and strategy of racquetball.

HPER 1165 Fitness Walking, 2 credits
Designed to meet the fitness needs of the walker. Class for the student who is concerned with personal fitness level. Student does not have to be worried about game skills or competition, only self-improvement.

HPER 1166 Running, 2 credits
Designed to meet the fitness needs of the jogger and/or runner. This class is for students who are concerned with their personal fitness level.

HPER 1169 Pickleball, 1 credit
Modernized racquet game incorporating skills from tennis, badminton, and racquetball. This game can be set up and played virtually anywhere.

HPER 1170 Individualized Weight Training/Conditioning, 2 credits
Prerequisite: HPER 1160
Fitness course with emphasis on individual needs and wants. Students will design their own fitness program with the help of the instructor. Areas of interest may include weight training, cardiovascular training, and/or flexibility.

HPER 1171 Bicycle Touring, 1 credit
Introduction to bicycle touring. Topics include equipment, repair, safety concerns, and riding techniques. Bicycle touring of various trails throughout the metro area will be part of this course.

HPER 1172 Karate, 1 credit
Okinawa Shuri—te Karate (karate meaning “empty hands”) is an ancient technique in weaponless self-defense. Emphasis is placed on learning an Oriental art form. Students should expect increased physical involvement as training progresses.

HPER 1173 Taekwondo, 1 credit
This course is an introduction to fundamental techniques and principles of Taekwondo. Taekwondo, which means the ‘way of hand and foot’, is an ancient Korean martial art that fosters techniques of self-defense while promoting health of mind and body. The Asian traditions which underlie this martial art will also be emphasized in this course. Physical and mental training characterizes each class session.

HPER 1174 Basketball, 1 credit
Basic rules, skills, techniques, and strategies for the game of basketball.

HPER 1175 Volleyball, 1 credit
Introduction to beginning power volleyball. The student will learn basic fundamentals of the game—pass, set, spike, and serve in a game situation. The ability to perform the basic fundamentals will be demonstrated in game situations as well as skills testing. Students will also learn the rules, strategies and proper etiquette of volleyball.

HPER 1176 Intermediate Volleyball, 1 credit
Power volleyball class for students with above-average skills (forearm pass, serve, set, spike tip, block) as well as knowledge of game strategies (offense/defense). Instructor approval and sufficient skills to play power volleyball are recommended.

HPER 1178 Softball, 1 credit
Fundamental skills, techniques, rules, and strategies of co-ed slow-pitch softball.

HPER 1179 Sailing, 2 credit
This course begins with the basic principles of sailboating and small boat handling and works toward making the student a competent skipper. The course ends with a weekend sailing cruise. Upon proving their competency, the student will be certified to bareboat chartering on Lake Superior.

HPER 1199 Approved Activity, 1 credit
Designed to allow a student to register for an instructional activity not on the regular curriculum. Students must request approval from the physical education staff and the Dean of Educational Services prior to registration and prior to the start of the activity. Three criteria are required: successful completion of at least one regular HPER activity course at ARCC prior to registration, course must be a class not offered within the HPER curriculum and course must have been taught by a qualified instructor within the given field.

HPER 2205 Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries, 2 credits
Introduction to basic athletic training. Covers a variety of topics including anatomy, physiology, injury prevention, conditioning, kinesiology, injury care, and rehabilitation. Students will also learn practical skills such as taping, splinting, wrapping, spine stabilization, and back boarding.

HPER 2207 Fitness testing and Exercise Prescription, 3 credits
This course provides an overview of how to assess cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, body fat, pulmonary function, and blood pressure and evaluate the results. Emphasis is placed on determining the appropriate test, conducting the test, evaluating the results, and creating an exercise program. This course is designed for the student pursuing a career in the fitness industry, a certificate in the proposed Fitness Specialist Program, as well as those interested in furthering their understanding of the effects of exercise on the mind and body.

HPER 2210/2211/2219 Intercollegiate Sports, 0-1 credit
Prerequisites: Recent participant in the sport at high school level, high level of fitness and athleticism, varsity team member based on tryout with the coach
Fundamentals, techniques, strategy, practice and competition. No more than one course from this list may be applied toward the wellness requirement. Students may repeat the course to gain a maximum of 2 credits per sport.

HPER 2219 Intercollegiate Volleyball

HPER 2299 Independent Study, 1-3 credits
Prerequisite: Completion of Wellness requirement
Designed to offer students the opportunity to do extensive reading or research on a specific topic in public health or physical education.
