Alternative Credit Options

Students may be granted credit through alternative options. Unless otherwise indicated, such credit is so noted on the transcript and the letter grade is Pass/Fail or Pass/No Credit.

Advanced Placement Program (AP)

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program provides high school students the opportunity to participate in classes that are more rigorous and more in-depth than other high school offerings. The College Board evaluates and recommends credit for each score of three or more on the five-point Advanced Placement exams.

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in the United States. The American Council on Education (ACE) evaluates and recommends credit for successful examinations in 34 college-level introductory subjects. The University of Minnesota is the CLEP testing center for students in the ARCC service area.

College On Your Corner

The College On Your Corner program provides students the opportunity to enjoy learning, expand skills, start degrees, or complete prerequisites and general education classes at convenient off-campus locations.

Competency-Based Education Program

The Competency Based Education (CBE) Program is a nontraditional, individualized program to meet the educational needs of adults, which allows the student's experiential learning to be assessed for college credit toward the attainment of an associate degree. It is a flexible program utilizing community resources, individualized choice of study, on-the-job training, in-service workshops, classroom instruction and internships.

Students interested in the CBE Program need to meet with the program coordinator and complete the three-credit Individualized Educational Planning Course, ICBE 1101.

Cooperative Education Internships

The Cooperative Education Internship Program offers an extension of the classroom into an on-the-job location designed to provide students with a realistic introduction to potential careers. Internships are valued at two, four, six , or eight credits. Each two-credit experience requires 75 hours on the job and attendance at a weekly seminar.

Students who have earned at least 20 college credits and who have at least a 2.0 GPA may enroll for the Cooperative Education Program.

Credit by Examination

Students who demonstrate achievement in the content of a college-level course may be granted a maximum of 10 college credits credit through the ARCC's Credit by Examination program.

Students choose a letter grade or the Pass/Fail option, and may not retest in the event of an unsuccessful examination. The Credit by Examination is an exam specific to ARCC. Credits granted may or may not be accepted for transfer.

Dantes

The American Council on Education (ACE) evaluates and recommends credit for courses and examinations throughout most branches of the military within the Department of Defense.

Honors Program

The Honors Program at the Cambridge Campus provides independent study, small classes, intense dialogue and special projects to motivated capable students.

Independent Study

Independent Study offers an in-depth study in one area which offers an opportunity for extensive reading and research on a specific topic not offered as a regular course. Independent Study requires prior approval from the appropriate dean and the appropriate instructor.

Learning Communities

A Learning Community is a grouping of two or three individual courses, organized around a common theme, and taught seamlessly together as if they were one course. Students are able to learn multiple subjects with the same group of students and teachers.

Tech Prep Program

Successful completion of designated courses through the Oak Land Tech Prep Consortium Program may substitute for specific college courses or as elective credits in some programs at ARCC. Students admitted and registered into ARCC who present the original Tech Prep College Credit Certificate to the Records Office within the time limit specified on the certificate may be granted course credit.
