Last spring, the college’s TRIO Director, Cindy Nutter and her staff applied for Veterans Upward Bound to accompany the other two TRIO programs offered: Student Support Services and Upward Bound. Funds for these federal programs are scarce, but the need to provide greater services to returning veterans is well-known. In the ranking system, the college scored 100 points out of 100 points, so was funded for five years instead of four.
The college will serve a total of 120 veterans this year, offering instruction, tutoring, academic advising, career counseling, assistance with college applications, assistance with financial aid application process and connecting to community resources.
“We are so pleased to be able to offer more services to veterans,” says Nutter. “Services are provided at no cost to any veteran who has served at least six months of active duty, including newly discharged veterans and veterans who served during the Vietnam era and anywhere in-between.”
To orient veterans and their family and friends to the services and resources available, the Coon Rapids Campus will host an open house, Thursday, Oct. 11, 6-8 p.m. in the cafeteria. Information about the Veterans Upward Bound program will be available, as well as other information and resources.
Along with resources such as the Veterans Upward Bound program, Anoka-Ramsey Community College offers an on-campus resource center for veterans to provide veterans information, resources and referrals about benefits, such as the Montgomery GI bill, psychological assistance and physical injury support.
